Manchaca is an unincorporated community in southern Travis County, a census-designated place along FM 1626 and the old rail line. It takes its name from Manchaca Springs, a stopping place on the Old San Antonio Road and later the Chisholm Trail. The International-Great Northern Railroad laid its Austin-to-Laredo track through town in 1881, which created the townsite you see today (the Handbook of Texas tells the full story).
About that spelling: inside Austin, the city renamed Manchaca Rd to Menchaca Rd to honor José Antonio Menchaca, and new signs went up in December 2019 along the stretch between S Lamar Blvd and FM 1626. The community kept its own spelling. So if your map app says Menchaca Rd, you're on the right road to our office.
